In Tasmania, Sassafras is found in most areas of the state, except for drier areas of the east coast. It is common on both the eastern and western mountain ranges. Of all Tasmanian timbers, Sassafras has the most variable and dynamic colouring. It is a beautiful and pale creamy grey to white normally, but can be streaked with rich browns and black heart.
The Skilled Artisan Behind Bruce's Boxes:
Craig, the craftsman behind Bruce's Boxes, apprenticed under his late father Bruce for many years works from his home-based workshop in Launceston. Whilst having a modern workshop with all the newer woodworking tools, at the end of the day Craig believe's nothing beats the finish of good old fashion "elbow Grease". In other words, the timber products are all hand finished. Craig achieves a quality finish that is as much about the tactile feel as it is about visual appeal.
Knowing his timbers well, Craig only purchases select grade material sourced in Tasmania for his boxes. The timbers arrive pre-seasoned and ready for machining to the desired dimensions. Craig then meticulously thicknesses each board, investing extra time to color match each component, ensuring the best combination for every box.
Over the years, Craig has established relationships with a select group of well-respected millers and timber merchants in Tasmania, always ensuring that his timber is sourced sustainably. Bruce's Boxes are crafted from fine solid timber, offering an unparalleled feel, smell, and appearance that glossy thin veneers cannot match. Full-length piano hinges are used to attach the lids to the box bodies, featuring a specially designed backrest that provides exceptional stability and strength.
